How the Warhammer Fantasy-style Name Generator (Empire, Bretonnia, Skaven, Chaos) works

A Warhammer Fantasy name generator for the Old World's great factions: soldiers and witch hunters of the Empire, knights of Bretonnia, Skaven of the Under-Empire and champions of Chaos. Each faction has its own naming style, from German Empire names to Skaven ranks and titles of the Dark Gods. Pick a faction and gender and muster a warband.

How the Warhammer Fantasy name generator works

The Old World is a grim mirror of early modern Europe. The Empire is Germanic, so its people have names like Ulrich Kessler and Liesel Brandt, tied to cities like Middenheim and Altdorf. Bretonnia is Arthurian France, with knights called Sir Gerard de Mousillon on a quest for the Grail. The generator gives each Empire name a city or a role, such as witch hunter or battle wizard, and each Bretonnian knight a rank from Knight Errant to Grail Knight.

    Skaven and Chaos names

Skaven are ratmen, and their names are short and hissing, Queek, Ikit, Skrittik, with a rank and a boastful or insulting byname. Grey Seers lead them, warlords fight for them, and warlock engineers build their mad weapons. Chaos champions have harsh, barbaric names with an epithet and a patron god: Khorne for blood, Nurgle for plague, Tzeentch for change and sorcery, Slaanesh for excess. The generator puts all of that together.

    Using the names

These names suit Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, The Old World tabletop game, Total War: Warhammer campaigns and fan fiction. A few famous names are in the lists for flavour. This site is not affiliated with Games Workshop.

    FAQ

    How do Skaven names work?

Skaven names are short and harsh, often one or two syllables with sounds like sk, qu and tch. Most are preceded by a rank, such as Grey Seer, Warlord or Plague Priest, and followed by a byname that boasts or insults. Skaven constantly betray each other, so bynames like Backstabber are common.

Which Chaos god should my champion follow?

It depends on the champion. Khorne suits warriors who live for bloodshed, Nurgle those who embrace decay and endurance, Tzeentch sorcerers and schemers, and Slaanesh those driven by pride and excess. Chaos Undivided champions serve all four. The generator gives a random patron you can change.

Why do Empire names sound German?

The Empire is modelled on the Holy Roman Empire, so its people have German names and its cities have German names like Altdorf and Middenheim. Bretonnia is based on medieval France, and Kislev on Russia. The generator follows the same inspirations.

Can I use these names in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay?

Yes. The generator is designed for WFRP characters, NPCs and warbands. Use the Empire option for most player characters, and Skaven or Chaos for villains. The generated names are not canon, so they will not clash with existing characters.
