How the Westeros-style Name Generator (Game Of Thrones Flavour) works
A Westeros name generator for lords, ladies, knights and bastards of the Seven Kingdoms, in Game of Thrones flavour. Pick a region to get names and houses that sound right for the North, the Reach, Dorne or the Iron Islands, and choose bastard birth to get the regional surname: Snow, Flowers, Sand, Pyke, Hill or Waters.
How the Westeros name generator works
George R. R. Martin's names are real medieval English names slightly altered: Eddard for Edward, Robert, Jaime for James, Tywin, Rodrik. Each region has its own flavour. Northern names are old and blunt, Reach names are courtly and flowery, Dornish names have a Rhoynish lilt, and Ironborn names sound Norse. The generator keeps separate first-name and house tables for each region so a Dornish lord never ends up with a northern surname.
Bastard surnames
In Westeros, a noble's acknowledged bastard takes a surname from the region of their birth: Snow in the North, Flowers in the Reach, Sand in Dorne, Pyke in the Iron Islands, Hill in the Westerlands, Waters in the Crownlands, Rivers in the Riverlands and Stone in the Vale. The Bastard option gives a first name with the right regional surname, so Rickon Snow or Tyene Sand come out as they would in the books.
Using the names
These names are fan-made, built to sit alongside the real houses in fan fiction and Game of Thrones tabletop campaigns. Many of the house names are real minor houses from the books, useful for filling out a court. This site is not affiliated with George R. R. Martin or HBO.
FAQ
What surname do bastards get in Game of Thrones?
It depends on the region of birth. Bastards born in the North are Snow, the Reach Flowers, Dorne Sand, the Iron Islands Pyke, the Westerlands Hill, the Crownlands Waters, the Riverlands Rivers, the Vale Stone and the Stormlands Storm. Jon Snow is the most famous.
Why do Westeros names sound almost English?
Martin based Westeros loosely on medieval Britain and altered familiar names by a letter or two. Eddard is a variant of Edward, Petyr of Peter, Jaime of James. That makes the names feel historical and familiar while still belonging to a fantasy world.
Are these houses from the books?
Many are. Minor houses like Glover, Tarly, Dayne and Marbrand appear in A Song of Ice and Fire. Paired with a generated first name, they give you new members of real houses, which is often exactly what fan fiction and campaigns need.
Can I use these names for my own campaign?
Yes. First names and house names drawn from medieval English are fine for your own games and fan fiction. For a commercial product, avoid the great houses like Stark and Lannister and anything else strongly tied to the series.
