How the Yuan-ti Name Generator works

A yuan-ti name generator for D&D's serpentfolk, the scheming snake people of jungle temples and ancient empires. Yuan-ti names hiss, full of s, z and th sounds, and grow longer and stranger the more snake-like the yuan-ti is. Pick a caste, from near-human pureblood to towering abomination, or a temple title.

How the yuan-ti name generator works

Yuan-ti society is a strict caste system. Purebloods look almost human and can pass among other races, so their names are the shortest and least alien. Malisons are half snake, and abominations are almost entirely serpent, at the top of the hierarchy. The generator builds names from sibilant syllables and adds more of them for higher castes, so a pureblood might be Kessira and an abomination Sssaliraskth. Temple titles give you the ranks of a yuan-ti priesthood devoted to their serpent gods.

    Playable yuan-ti

Newer D&D rules allow yuan-ti player characters, who are closer to purebloods. For a player character, pick Pureblood for a name that is still easy to say at the table, and keep a longer name for when the character is among their own kind.

    FAQ

What sounds make a good yuan-ti name?

Hissing and sliding sounds: s, ss, z, sh and th, with vowels that can be drawn out. A yuan-ti name should sound like it could be whispered by a snake. Doubled s at the start or the end is a strong signal. Keep purebloods more pronounceable so they can pass among humans.

How should yuan-ti castes be named?

The higher the caste, the more serpentine and longer the name. Purebloods have short names that could pass as foreign human names, malisons have longer and stranger names, and abominations have names that are almost unpronounceable. The generator follows this rule when you pick a caste.

Can a yuan-ti pureblood use a human name?

Yes, and many do when infiltrating other societies. A pureblood spy might have a human name for public use and a yuan-ti name among their own kind. Use the human name generators in this section for the cover identity and this page for the real name.

What are yuan-ti temple titles for?

Yuan-ti worship serpent gods through a priesthood, and a temple has ranks from humble keepers to high priests. The Temple title mode gives a name with a rank and a temple, which is useful for naming the villain at the top of a jungle dungeon.
