How the Contract End Date Calculator works

Fixed-term contracts are everywhere: employment contracts, software subscriptions, equipment leases, service agreements, insurance policies and mobile phone plans. Most say something like "for a period of 12 months from the start date", and most catch people out at the end. Either the renewal deadline passes unnoticed and the contract rolls over for another year, or someone assumes the term ends on the anniversary when it actually ended the day before.

How the contract end date calculator works

Enter the start date and the length. Days and weeks are added as calendar days, seven to a week. Months and years move to the same date in a later month, and if that month is shorter the date is pulled back to its last day, so six months from 31 August lands on 28 February or 29 February in a leap year.

That gives the anniversary. The Last day option then decides how the end is read:

• Day before the anniversary is the usual reading, because the start date counts as the first day of the term. A 12-month contract starting on 1 March 2026 runs to 28 February 2027. Count the days and you get exactly 365.
• On the anniversary date suits contracts that say the term ends on a given date, or those that run until a stated time on the anniversary. The same contract would then end on 1 March 2027.

Check the wording of your contract. Phrases such as "for a period of" or "commencing on" usually mean the day before; "until" followed by a date means that date.

Reading the result

• Contract ends gives the final day in full with the weekday.
• ISO date writes it as YYYY-MM-DD for diaries and spreadsheets.
• Term in days counts every day from start to end, both included.
• Give notice by appears when you enter a notice period and works back that many days from the end.
• From today shows how many days are left, or how long ago the contract ended.

Renewal deadlines

Automatic renewal clauses are the main reason to calculate this date. A typical clause says the contract renews for another term unless either side gives, say, 30 or 90 days' written notice before the end. Miss that by a day and you may be bound for another full year at the old price, or a higher one.

Put the notice deadline in your calendar with a reminder a few weeks before it, and send notice with enough margin for post or slow email. Some contracts count notice from the day it is received rather than sent, and some require notice to be sent to a specific address or person.

Worked examples

A two-year software licence starting on 15 January 2026, ending the day before the anniversary, ends on 14 January 2028. With 60 days' notice required, the deadline is 15 November 2027.

A 26-week temporary employment contract starting on Monday 7 September 2026 ends on Sunday 7 March 2027, a term of 182 days.

A 90-day trial starting on 1 October 2026 ends on 29 December 2026 when the start day counts, one day earlier than simply adding 90 days to the start date.

Common mistakes

• Assuming a year is 365 days. A term that crosses 29 February has 366 days, and the calculator counts the real calendar.
• Adding a month as 30 days. Month lengths vary, so 30 days from 31 January is 2 March, while one month is 28 February.
• Forgetting a minimum term. Some agreements allow notice only after an initial period, which this calculator does not check.
• Ignoring business-day rules. If a contract says notice must arrive on a business day, move a weekend deadline earlier.

What the calculator does not decide

Whether a contract can be ended early, what happens if notice is late and whether a fixed-term employment contract becomes permanent all depend on the contract and the law where you are. This tool only does the date arithmetic. For anything in dispute, read the contract and get advice.

How many days common contract terms run

The formula adds the term to the start date and steps back one day, because the start day counts as day one. For example, a 24-month contract starting 1 March 2026 ends on Tuesday 29 February 2028, 731 days later, because 2028 is a leap year. Each example below uses that start date.
