How the Notice Period Calculator works

This notice period calculator finds the last day of notice from the date you hand in your resignation, receive notice or serve it on a landlord or supplier. Enter the length in days, weeks or months and choose how the first day is counted to get the end date, calendar days and weekdays.

Notice periods are written in plain language, such as one month or four weeks, but turning that into a date is surprisingly easy to get wrong. Does the day you hand in your letter count? What happens to one month's notice given on 31 January? Getting the date a day out can mean an extra day of pay, a missed start date at a new job or a rental deposit dispute.

How the notice period calculator counts

The calculator supports the two counting conventions you will meet in contracts and policies.

Weeks are always seven calendar days. Months move to the same date in a later month: one month from 5 October ends on 5 November, or 4 November when the notice day counts. When the later month is shorter, the date is pulled back to that month's last day, so one month from 31 January ends on 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year.

Reading the result

If notice ends on a Saturday or Sunday, a note gives the last weekday before it. Many people agree with their employer to finish on that Friday, but whether that is allowed depends on your agreement.

Worked examples

One month's notice given on Thursday 15 October, counting from the day after, ends on Sunday 15 November. The note suggests Friday 13 November as the last working day before it, and the notice covers 31 calendar days and 21 weekdays.

Four weeks' notice given on Friday 2 October ends on Friday 30 October.

Thirty days' notice to a landlord given on 1 March ends on 31 March, which is often what a tenancy requires so that the move-out lines up with the end of a rent period.

What this calculator does not decide

The calculator counts dates; it does not tell you how much notice is required. That depends on your employment contract, tenancy agreement, collective agreement or service terms, and on the law where you live. Contracts sometimes say notice must be given in writing, received by a certain day, or end on the last day of a month or a pay period. Read those terms carefully, apply them first, and then use the calculator to find the date.

When notice is sent by post or email, the date it is treated as given may be the date it is received rather than the date it was sent. If the timing is tight, send it a few days early and keep proof of delivery.

Tips for resigning or giving notice

Notice for leases and services

The same counting applies to rental agreements, phone contracts, gym memberships and supplier agreements. Tenancies often require notice to end on the last day of a rental period, so check that rule and use the rental lease calculator to see payment dates. For fixed-term contracts with a renewal deadline, the contract end date calculator works back from the end of the term.

How many days each notice period lasts

The formula adds the notice length to the date notice is given; months are calendar months, and a date that does not exist in the target month falls back to that month's last day. For example, one month from Monday 5 October 2026 ends on Thursday 5 November 2026, which is 31 calendar days and 23 weekdays. Each example below starts from the same Monday.

FAQ

Does the day I hand in my notice count?

It depends on the wording of your contract or policy. Most agreements count notice from the day after it is given, which is the default here. Choose Notice day counts as day one if your contract says notice starts on the day it is served.

When does one month's notice end if I give it on the 31st?

The notice ends on the last day of the following month when that month has no 31st. One month's notice given on 31 January ends on 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year, counting from the day after.

What if my notice ends on a weekend?

The calculator shows a note with the last weekday before it. Your notice still technically runs to the weekend date, but many employers agree to the Friday as the last working day. Confirm this with them in writing.

Does the calculator account for public holidays?

No. Public holidays differ by country and region, so the weekday count includes them. Take off any holidays that fall in your notice period to find the number of days you will actually work.
