How the Anagram Solver works

This anagram solver rearranges every letter of a word or phrase into new words. It lists single-word anagrams, such as LISTEN to SILENT and TINSEL, and two-word anagrams that use every letter exactly once, with the most evenly balanced pairs first.

How the anagram solver finds matches

Every dictionary word is filed under its letters in alphabetical order, so SILENT, LISTEN and ENLIST all sit under EILNST. A single-word anagram is a lookup of your letters' key. For two words, the solver tries every word your letters can make, works out the leftover letters and looks those up too.

Two-word anagrams

Two-word results are listed with the closest lengths first, since a balanced pair usually reads better. Raise the shortest word setting to drop pairs built on tiny words like A or IN. Long phrases can have thousands of pairs; the first thousand found are shown.

Spaces and punctuation

Spaces, apostrophes and capital letters are ignored, so "Dormitory" and "dirty room" are treated as the same nine letters. That is why the solver can turn a name or phrase into new words without any tidying up first.

FAQ

What is the difference between an anagram and an unscramble?

An anagram uses every letter exactly once. Unscrambling also lists shorter words hidden in the letters. Use the word unscrambler when you want every word, and this page when you need the letters used up.

Can it find anagrams of three or more words?

Not directly. Find a two-word anagram, then run either word back through the solver to split it further. Fixing one word you like and anagramming the rest is the classic way to build longer ones.

Why is my word not shown as its own anagram?

The word you typed is left out of the one-word list, since every word is trivially an anagram of itself. If a word has no other arrangement, the one-word count shows None.
