How the Word Unscrambler works

This word unscrambler turns jumbled letters back into real words. Type the letters in any order and words that use all of them are highlighted first, followed by every shorter word they contain. A ? stands for a letter you do not know.

How the word unscrambler works

The letters are counted and compared with every word in the dictionary. A word matches if it needs no letter more often than you typed it. Words that use every letter are the true unscrambles and are highlighted. Each ? can stand in for any one letter.

Daily jumbles and puzzles

Newspaper jumbles scramble a single word, so look at the highlighted results first. When there are several, such as PLANETS, PLATENS and the unscrambled answer the puzzle wants, the cartoon clue or the circled letters usually settle it.

When nothing uses every letter

If no word uses all the letters, the longest groups at the top are the closest fits. Double-check the letters for a typo, or replace a doubtful letter with ? to let the unscrambler try every option.

FAQ

Can it unscramble phrases?

It finds single words. For a phrase, the anagram solver also lists pairs of words that use every letter, which covers most two-word answers. Longer phrases are best solved one word at a time.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to fifteen, including any ? or * for unknown letters. More letters give many more short words, so raise the shortest word setting to keep the list readable.

Does it work for Scrabble?

It lists every word, but the Scrabble word finder is better for a game. It ranks words by score, handles blank tiles as zero points and lets you play through letters already on the board.
