How the Crossword Solver works
This crossword solver finds every word that matches the letters you already have. Type the answer with a ? for each empty square, such as c?o?s for a five-letter word, and the list updates as you type. Add letters to rule out, or letters the answer must include.
How to write a crossword solver pattern
Each character is one square. Use a known letter where you have one and ? (or _ or .) for each blank. "?a?e" finds four-letter words with A second and E last, such as BAKE, CAFE and WAVE. Put * anywhere to mean any number of letters, so "un*able" finds words of any length that start with UN and end in ABLE.
Ruling letters in and out
Letters in the "cannot contain" box are blocked from the unknown squares, which helps when crossing answers have already used them. Letters in the "must contain" box have to appear somewhere in the word, which is handy for cryptic clues where you know the fodder but not the order.
Picking the right answer
The solver knows spelling, not meaning, so a common pattern can return dozens of words. Read down the list with the clue in mind. For anagram clues, the anagram solver is often faster: type the letters and it returns only words that use all of them.
FAQ
Does it include phrases and proper nouns?
No. The dictionary holds single words without capitals, so names, places and multi-word answers are not listed. For a two-word answer, solve each part with its own pattern, using the crossing letters you know.
Why do some results look obscure?
The list includes every valid word game word, many of them rare. Crossword setters favour common words, so start with the familiar ones. Narrowing the pattern with one more crossing letter usually helps.
Can I search for words of any length?
Yes. Use * in the pattern. A pattern of just "ology" lists every word ending in OLOGY, and "s" on its own lists every word starting with S, up to the display limit for each length.
