How the Battle Name Generator works

A battle name generator for historic battles, sieges and last stands. Every fantasy world has wars, and the battles that decide them become legends, songs and names on monuments. Pick a type and generate a name for the battle your heroes fight in, or the one their grandparents never stopped talking about.

How the battle name generator works

Field battles are named after the place they were fought, the Battle of Harrow Fields or the Battle of Kestrel Ridge, just like real history. Sieges name the town or castle under attack, the Siege of Duskwall. Naval battles are named after a stretch of sea or coast, the Battle of the Grey Straits. Last stands name the small place where a few defenders held out, the Last Stand at Widow's Pass. Nicknames are what soldiers and poets call a battle, the Field of Crows or the Day of Broken Spears. For the armies involved, try the legion name generator.

    Place names and nicknames

Official history uses the place name, but survivors use the nickname. Give your famous battles both, and the world feels lived in.

    FAQ

    How are real battles named?

Most real battles are named after the nearest town, river, hill or bridge. Sometimes each side uses a different name for the same battle, which is a detail you can borrow to show two cultures remember a war differently.

    What is a last stand?

A last stand is a battle where a small, outnumbered force fights to the end, usually to buy time for others. Last stands make powerful legends in fantasy stories and are great backstory for veteran characters.

How do I use battles in worldbuilding?

Place a few famous battles in your history and link them to monuments, songs, grudges and old soldiers. Players will meet the effects of old wars everywhere, even if they never fight in one themselves.

Can I use these names in my story?

Yes. The names are original and free to use in fantasy novels, tabletop campaigns, wargames and video games. Pair them with a war cry from the battle cry generator for the moment the charge begins.
