How the Bugbear Name Generator works

This bugbear name generator gives D&D's biggest goblinoids names to match: Grubnak, Hrugga, Brurok Quietfoot, Klardak the Patient. Choose a plain given name, a name with an ambush nickname, or a tribe or band name, and pick female, male or either.

Bugbear name generator: the sound of a brute

Bugbears are large, hairy goblinoids known for two things that seem to contradict each other: they are huge, and they are surprisingly stealthy. Their names should be short and blunt, with hard G, K and R sounds, a little heavier than a goblin's and less guttural than an orc's. The generator joins blunt openings like "Grub", "Hrok" and "Klar" to endings like "nak", "ush" and "ga", which gives names that are easy to shout across a table.

    Nicknames that tell the story

A bugbear's nickname usually describes how it fights. "Quietfoot" and "Softstep" play on the stealth, "Longarm" on their famous reach, "Sackhead" on the habit of stuffing victims into sacks. Nicknames are useful for NPCs because players remember "the one called Neckbreaker" long after they forget the given name.

    Tribes and allies

Bugbears often lead or serve goblins and hobgoblins. For the rest of a goblinoid war band, use the goblin name generator and hobgoblin name generator, and for heavier brutes the orc name generator.

    FAQ

What is a good name for a bugbear player character?

Something short enough to say every session. A two-syllable given name like "Hrugga" or "Brurok" works, and you can add a nickname earned in play. Players often enjoy an ironic one, such as "Tiny" for a seven-foot bugbear.

Are bugbear names different from goblin names?

They come from the same goblinoid tradition but sound heavier. Goblin names tend to be quick and squeaky, with lots of "ik" and "ee", while bugbear names are slower and blunter, built on "u", "o" and hard "g" or "k" sounds.

Can I use these for female bugbears?

Yes. Pick Female for names with softer endings like "ga", "ka" and "ula", such as "Hrugga" or "Yagula". Bugbear lore does not split names strictly by gender, so the Either option suits any character as well.
