How the Duergar Name Generator works

This duergar name generator makes names for the grey dwarves of the Underdark: Thorgrim Ashdelve, Vhona Grimforge, Murdak Slaveholt, Clan Chainvein. Pick a full name, a name with a grim title or a clan name, and choose female, male or either.

Duergar name generator: dwarf names gone grey

Duergar are dwarves who were enslaved by mind flayers and came out of it bitter, tireless and cruel. Their names sound like ordinary dwarf names but heavier, with fewer warm sounds and more "gr", "th" and "k". Clan names lean on slavery, mining and industry: "Chainvein", "Slaveholt", "Ashdelve". The tone is joyless on purpose, since duergar culture values work and grudges above everything else.

    Titles and clans

Duergar society is built around forges, mines and the city of Gracklstugh. Titles like "Overseer of the Pits" or "Servant of Laduguer", the duergar god, make good NPC labels for a city of slavers and smiths. Clan names work for a whole family, or as the name of a mining operation the party has to raid.

    Grey dwarves and their cousins

For surface dwarves, use the dwarf name generator, whose names sound warmer. For other Underdark folk, the drow name generator covers the dark elves, and the githyanki name generator another race with a history of illithid slavery.

    FAQ

How are duergar names different from dwarf names?

They share the same roots but carry a darker mood. Surface dwarf clan names celebrate craft and mountains, while duergar names lean on chains, ash, pits and gloom. Given names are similar, though duergar favour harsher endings.

    Who is Laduguer?

Laduguer is the duergar god of toil and slavery in the Forgotten Realms. He demands endless work and offers little in return, which shapes the grim culture of the grey dwarves and many of their titles.

Can a duergar player character use these names?

Yes. A duergar adventurer who has left the Underdark might keep their clan name as a mark of where they came from, or drop it to escape it. Either choice gives a quick hook for the character's backstory.
