How the Gnoll Name Generator works

This gnoll name generator makes names for the hyena-folk of D&D and fantasy fiction: Kekkra, Shrakkul, Yeenogh the Starving, Gnarash, Fang of Yeenoghu. Choose a short given name, a name with a pack title, or a warband name like the Laughing Maw. Each batch avoids repeating names.

What a gnoll name generator should sound like

Gnolls are hyena-headed raiders, driven by hunger and the demon lord Yeenoghu. Their names should sound like the animal: yips, cackles and snarls, short and repetitive. The generator uses sounds like "kek", "yip", "shrak" and "hyik", sometimes doubled with a hyphen, so names read like a laugh or a bark. They are quick to say, which suits gnolls that turn up in packs of a dozen.

    Pack titles and warbands

Gnoll packs follow the strongest, and a leader often carries a grim title like "Fang of Yeenoghu" or "Eater of Kings". Flinds, the larger gnoll leaders, give titles like "Flind-Chosen" to favourites. Warband names describe the group's hunger or its laugh: the Cackling Teeth, the Starving Pack, the Children of Yeenoghu. A named warband makes a raid feel like the work of a real enemy rather than random monsters.

    Pairing with other raiders

For the demon lord's other servants, the demon name generator helps, and for a mixed horde of monsters the orc name generator and goblin name generator cover the rest.

    FAQ

Do gnoll names have a gender?

Not in this generator. Gnoll lore treats the pack as more important than the individual, and their harsh names work for any gnoll. If you want a distinction, give leaders longer names with a title and leave the rank and file with one short bark.

    Who is Yeenoghu?

Yeenoghu is the demon lord of gnolls in D&D, a hyena-headed fiend whose hunger drives gnoll raids. Many gnoll titles and warband names mention him, so the generator includes titles like "Fang of Yeenoghu".

Can a gnoll be a player character?

Yes. Some settings allow gnolls who have broken from the demon's hunger. For one of those, use a plain given name and skip the grim titles, or pick a title the character wants to escape, which gives an easy backstory hook.
