How the Lovecraftian Name Generator works
A Lovecraftian name generator for cosmic horror. Pick a type and generate an unpronounceable entity name, an entity with a dread title, a New England scholar, a forbidden tome or a cult. Every name is original, built in the style of 1920s weird fiction, for stories, tabletop horror games and campaigns.
How the Lovecraftian name generator works
Cosmic entity names are built from harsh syllables with apostrophes and hyphens, so they look like they were never meant for a human mouth. Titles describe the entity instead of naming it, because some things are too vast to name. Scholars get stiff, old New England names and a small college, since weird fiction heroes are usually academics. Tomes use Latin or plain bleak titles. For other elder things, try the eldritch entity name generator.
Public domain and originality
Many of H. P. Lovecraft's stories are in the public domain in some countries, but this generator does not reuse any of his entities, towns or books. Every name here is new and built from the same mood, not the same words.
FAQ
What makes a name sound Lovecraftian?
Lovecraftian names mix harsh consonants like th, gh, x and q with apostrophes and hyphens. They look impossible to say, which suggests the thing was named by something that is not human.
Why are cosmic horror heroes usually scholars?
In 1920s weird fiction, the hero is often a professor or librarian who reads too much. Knowledge is the danger, so the person most likely to find the truth is the one most likely to go mad from it.
What is a forbidden tome?
A forbidden tome is an old book that holds knowledge humans should not have. It is a classic cosmic horror device, and reading it usually starts the story's descent into madness and ruin.
Can I use these in a cosmic horror game?
Yes. The entity names, scholars, tomes and cults are original and free to use in tabletop horror games and campaigns. They avoid reusing any named entities from existing cosmic horror stories.
