How the Middle-earth Name Generator works

A Middle-earth name generator for tabletop games set in Tolkien's world, including The One Ring, Adventures in Middle-earth and other Lord of the Rings RPG editions. Each culture of Middle-earth names its people differently. Generate hobbits, northern rangers, horse-lords, dwarves and elves, all original names built from the right patterns.

How the Middle-earth name generator works

Hobbits get cosy, old-fashioned English first names and earthy surnames about burrows and hedges, often with a home village. Northern rangers get Sindarin-style names with a patronymic, as the heirs of an ancient kingdom do. The horse-lords use Old English-style names built from short parts like Leof and wyn, since Tolkien modelled them on Anglo-Saxon speech. Dwarves use short Norse-style names and patronymics or epithets. Elves get flowing Elvish-style names and a realm.

    Cultures of the free peoples

Middle-earth games usually centre on one region. Pick the culture that matches your company and generate names together, so heroes feel like they grew up in the same place. For deeper Elvish and Dwarvish name building, try the Tolkien Elvish name generator and Tolkien Dwarvish name generator.

    FAQ

What do hobbit names sound like?

Cosy and a bit old-fashioned, like English country names from long ago, such as Poppy or Mungo. Surnames describe homes or landscapes, like Underhedge or Longbarrow, and many hobbits are known by their village too.

Why do horse-lord names sound Old English?

Tolkien based the horse-lords on the Anglo-Saxons, so their names use Old English elements. Names like Leofwyn or Wulfric combine short parts that each had a meaning, such as dear or wolf.

    How do dwarves name themselves?

Dwarves in Middle-earth use short Norse-style outer names and often add their father's name or an epithet, like Nár, son of Borin. Their true names were kept secret from other races.

Can I use these in other fantasy games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any classic fantasy game or story inspired by Tolkien, from D&D and other tabletop systems to novels and video games with hobbits, elves and dwarves.
