How the Rival Name Generator works
A rival name generator for rivals, nemeses and friendly competitors. A rival pushes the hero to be better, whether through smug superiority, friendly competition or bitter old history. Pick a type of rival and generate a name that tells readers exactly how the two characters get along.
How the rival name generator works
Smug aristocrats get long, fussy names with a number, Montague Pembrooke-Vane the Third, for the rich rival who never had to work for anything. Friendly competitors get short, cheerful names, Kit Swift or Rory Hart, for the rival who is also a friend. Former friends get plain, real-sounding names, Caleb Mercer or Elise Hale, because the history between them matters more than style. Sworn nemeses get sharp, dark names, Veska Blackmere or Lucan Ashfall, for the rival who has become an enemy. For full villains, try the villain name generator.
Rivals mirror the hero
A good rival is a mirror, the person the hero might have become. Choose a name that feels like the hero's opposite in some way.
FAQ
What is the difference between a rival and a villain?
A rival competes with the hero for the same goal, while a villain wants to hurt people or change the world for the worse. Rivals can become friends, and some even turn into villains if the story goes dark.
Why do smug rivals have long names?
Long, double-barrelled names and numbers like the Third show old money and privilege. They make the rival sound pompous, which is perfect for a character the hero, and the reader, will enjoy beating.
What makes a good nemesis name?
A nemesis name is short and sharp, with hard sounds like v, k and x. It should be easy to shout in anger during a final duel, and it should sound dangerous enough to worry the reader.
Can I use these names in my story?
Yes. The names are original and free to use in novels, anime-style stories, video games and tabletop campaigns. Pair your rival with a motivation from the character motivation generator so the competition has a clear reason.
