How the Spelling Bee Solver works

This spelling bee solver lists every word you can spell from a seven-letter hive, using the centre letter in each one. Pangrams, words that use all seven letters, are highlighted at the top, and each word shows the points it would earn so you can see the total on offer.

How the spelling bee solver works

Type the centre letter and the six letters around it. The solver checks a dictionary for words of at least four letters that contain the centre letter and use only letters from the hive. Letters can be used more than once, so LITTLE counts if L, I, T and E are in the hive.

How points are counted

A four-letter word scores one point. Longer words score one point per letter, so a six-letter word is worth six. A pangram earns its length plus a seven-point bonus. The solver adds these up to give the total available in the hive.

Why the totals differ from the official puzzle

The official puzzle uses a hand-picked word list that leaves out obscure, technical and offensive words. This solver uses a larger open dictionary, so it will usually find more words and a higher total than the game accepts. The common words near the top are the ones most likely to count.

FAQ

Can I use it just for hints?

Yes. Raise the minimum length to see only the long words, or glance at the pangram count without reading the list. Covering the results and checking one length group at a time works well as a gentle nudge.

What if the hive has a repeated letter?

Spelling Bee hives always have seven different letters. The solver asks for six outer letters that differ from each other and from the centre, and tells you if one is repeated or missing.

Is there always a pangram?

In the official puzzle, yes, at least one. With letters you make up yourself there may be none, in which case the pangram group is left out and the count shows None.
