How the Wizard Tower Name Generator works
This wizard tower name generator makes names for mage spires, arcane towers and sanctums in D&D and fantasy: the Ninefold Spire, Starwatch Tower, the Leaning Tower of Mordrin, the Orrery of Seven Stars. Choose a tower, one named after its wizard, or a sanctum.
How the wizard tower name generator builds names
A wizard's tower says as much about its owner as their robes do. The generator mixes three kinds of name. Descriptive names, such as the Crooked Needle or the Obsidian Spire, describe how the tower looks. Compound names, such as Starwatch or Runecrown, sound like places on a map. Names that mention a mystery, such as "the Tower of Endless Stairs", promise something strange inside.
Named after the wizard
Many famous fantasy towers are known by their owner: Orthanc is Saruman's, and plenty of D&D settings have a "Blackstaff Tower" or an archmage's spire. Naming a tower after its wizard makes the place feel personal and tells players exactly whose door they are knocking on. A ruined tower named for a long-dead wizard is a ready-made dungeon.
Sanctums and observatories
Not every mage lives in a tower. Sanctums, observatories and orreries suit scholars, astrologers and secretive orders. For the wizard who lives there, try the wizard name generator, for a school of magic the fantasy academy name generator, and for the spells in their books the fantasy spell name generator.
FAQ
What makes a good wizard tower name?
It should hint at the wizard's school of magic or personality. A storm mage might live in Stormreach, a necromancer in the Hollow Spire and a diviner in Starwatch. Short names are easier for players to remember across sessions than long poetic ones.
Should a wizard tower have a secret name?
It can add a lot. Give the tower a common name that locals use and a true name written over the door in an old script. Learning the true name might open a sealed door or reveal what the wizard was really studying.
Can I use these for a castle or keep?
Many of them work. The Tower and Keep forms in particular fit any fortified building. For a full castle, though, the fantasy castle name generator offers names built for walls, gates and dynasties.
